Sometimes you need money saved quickly — an unexpected bill is coming, you want to build a starter emergency fund, or you’re just done being broke. Here are 20 ways to find $500 or more this month without a second job.
Cut expenses immediately
- Cancel unused subscriptions today. Pull up your bank statement right now. Cancel anything you haven’t used in 30 days. Average savings: $50–$150/month.
- Pause one streaming service. Just one. You won’t miss it. Savings: $10–$20/month.
- Cut dining out in half this month. If you normally eat out 8 times, eat out 4. Cook the rest. Average savings: $100–$200/month.
- Shop your car insurance. Call two competitors and ask for a quote. Mention you’re thinking of switching. Average savings if you switch: $300–$600/year ($25–$50/month).
- Call your internet provider. Ask for a loyalty discount or threaten to cancel. Average savings: $20–$40/month.
- Switch to a cheaper phone plan. Mint Mobile, Visible, or Cricket offer the same coverage for 50–70% less. Savings: $30–$60/month.
- Cut the gym membership if you are not going. A $40/month gym you visit twice is $20 per visit. Cancel it.
Find money you already have
- Sell 5 things this week. Phone, clothes, electronics, furniture, anything. Facebook Marketplace, Poshmark, eBay. Average: $100–$300 per round of selling.
- Return items you bought and never used. Check your receipts. Most stores accept returns within 30–90 days.
- Check for unclaimed money. Go to your state’s unclaimed property website. Many people have old deposits, refunds, or account balances sitting there unclaimed.
- Cash in rewards points. Credit card points, airline miles, store rewards — log in and see what you have sitting unused.
Reduce variable spending
- Do a no-spend week. Seven days of buying only absolute necessities. Average savings: $100–$200.
- Meal prep for the whole week on Sunday. Eliminates daily food decision fatigue that leads to expensive takeout.
- Use the store brand for everything this month. 20–40% cheaper on almost every item.
- Buy gas at Costco or warehouse clubs. Typically 10–20 cents cheaper per gallon. On a 15-gallon tank, that is $1.50–$3 per fill-up.
- Delete all shopping apps from your phone. If you can not see the store, you can not impulse buy from it.
Bring in extra cash
- Pick up one extra shift or gig this week. DoorDash, Instacart, Uber — even one 4-hour shift can generate $60–$100.
- Offer a service to your neighbors. Lawn mowing, dog walking, car washing, handyman work. Post in your neighborhood Facebook group.
- Do a deep clean of your home. Every time people do a proper deep clean they find things to sell, return, or stop paying for.
- Automate the savings immediately. Set up an automatic transfer to a separate savings account for every dollar you free up. If the money stays in checking, it gets spent.
